I care about building the communities that make digital humanities work possible, and that
starts with students. I mentor undergraduates both formally and informally: as an advisor,
through independent studies, and by bringing them into research with the Distant Viewing Lab and
the Center for Liberal Arts and AI. I have also led the
field’s national and international scholarly organizations as President of the
Association for Computers and the Humanities and the
Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations, and I
co-edit Computational Humanities Research. I do a substantial amount of peer review,
though I generally decline to review for for-profit presses or for articles that will not be
published open access. At Richmond and beyond, I serve on doctoral juries, advisory boards, and
committees shaping how universities and scholarly associations approach AI.
